Language Buddies
The Language Buddies program matches English-speaking volunteers from the community with newcomers who want to improve their English and gain more confidence.Primary Responsibilities
- Arrange meeting times
- Guided conversations - assist newcomers as they work on daily conversation skills, pronunciation, and new vocabulary
Time Commtiment
- Meeting times and locations are flexible, depending on volunteer and newcomer availability
- One or two conversation meetings per week
- One to two hours per meeting
- Minimum three month session
Orientation, Training, and Support
- Volunteer orientation sessions will include program information and address tutoring techniques, learning styles, learning activities, culture shock, etc.
- Tutor toolkits include materials, resources, and learning activities
Requirements
- A valid and current Criminal Record Check and a Child Abuse Registry form must be submitted prior to engaging with newcomers
- If English is not your first language, CLB 6 or higher is required
- Keep private client information confidential
How do I get started?
1. Submit an application form and current resume, if available
2. Meet with the Volunteer Program Coordinator
3. Attend initial training session
4. Meet your language buddy
5. Have fun!
