Study English Yourself
Set Goals and Make a Plan
The first thing to do is to set goals and make a plan for your learning. As an adult living in an English country, you are in control of how much English you learn! Most people learn better with goals and a plan. Think about:- Where do I need to use English this week? At work? At the store? At the bank? With my neighbours?
- What do I need to do in English? Speak? Read? Write? Listen?
- How many new words do I want to learn this week?
- How much time will I spend studying every day?

English is Everywhere!
Living in Canada, you can practice and learn English almost anywhere! Here are some great ideas:
- Make 1 or 2 English speaking friends. Invite them to your house for dinner or just for coffee.
- Go to the library. The Winkler library has an EAL section for learning English. You can also get easier to read books for young people. The library has many books on CD, so you can listen and read at the same time!
- Watch TV and DVDs. On your TV, turn on Closed Captioning (CC) so you can see the words. On a DVD, turn on Subtitles so you can see the words.
- Listen to the radio. You can listen to music or talk radio. Listen right now on your computer!
- Read the newspaper or a local news website. You may not understand everything, but you can:
- Look for the main idea. What is the story about?
- Look for the main information and write it down. Answer: Who? What? Where? When? and Why?
- Look for 5 new words and write them in your new word list.
- Write your new words on small cards. Put the cards in your pocket and study them through the day.
- Check a community calendar, go to public events, and meet new people!
- Volunteer or join a club/group!
