What will I learn in EAL / Literacy classes?

You will learn how to speak, listen, read and write in English. You will also learn about things like:

  • Canadian laws
  • health care
  • the job market

To work in Canada in your field or occupation, you may need to learn more English after the EAL class ends.

When are classes held?

Regular part-time EAL classes are held from September to April of each year. Classes are held mornings, afternoons, and evenings to assure that there is a class that suits your work schedule.

Full time classes run for three consecutive terms:

  • September - December
  • January - March
  • April - June

Entry Level or Survival English classes for new arrivals are also held during the summer months.

What is the nurse's class, and who can take it?

This class is for people with a nurse's certificate. It is designed to assess the English Language proficiency of internationally educated nurses who want to work in Canada. The class helps students prepare for their assessment exam. To take this class, you need to have Canadian Benchmark Level 5 in all areas. The classes are held once a week for 11 weeks.

At the end of this class, you will be able to complete a practice exam to see if you are ready for the assessment exam.

How long is the EAL / Literacy program?

EAL and Literacy classes are held from the end of September to the end of March each year.

What are the attendance rules?

Your school will tell you about the attendance rules. Students are expected to attend all of their classes on time. Please do not register if you cannot attend all the classes.

What can I do if I need childcare?

Some EAL classes have child care for preschool aged children. Locations and spaces are limited, and there will be a small fee. Contact the Regional Connections main office for more information.

Can I continue to get Employment Insurance (EI)?

If you are interested in full-time English classes, you should tell your school you are on EI. Before you apply to study, go to your Service Canada Centre to ask if you can continue to receive EI benefits while attending EAL classes.

If you have more questions, please call the Regional Connections main office.
